Project Overview
This project evaluated and enhanced the usability and learning experience design (LXD) of "School for You", South Korea's national online learning platform for students with chronic health conditions. Guided by Universal Design for Learning (UDL), Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), and usability for EdTech principles, the project aimed to identify and address barriers that affect inclusive and engaging online learning experiences.
*This project was commissioned by KEDI (Korean Educational Development Institution).
Problem We Found
“How can online learning experience be redesigned to address the diverse needs of students with chronic health conditions?”
Although School for You was designed to ensure educational continuity for students unable to attend school physically, the platform's structure and interface often fell short in addressing diverse learner needs. Users reported difficulties in navigation, limited emotional engagement, and content that did not fully support self-paced or accessible learning.
These issues highlighted a gap between the platform's intended inclusivity and the actual user experience of learners and educators.
Our Approach
Our research team conducted a comprehensive literature review, global case studies, expert evaluation on UDL, SEL, and usability for EdTech frameworks to assess pedagogical and design challenges within the platform.
To capture diverse perspectives, focus group interviews (FGIs) were held with educators, developers, and policymakers. Drawing from these insights, three representative personas were developed to analyze user needs and experiences, leading to actionable design strategies for improving both LXD and usability.
Key Results
Strategic report submitted to KEDI
- •The research identified critical usability gaps related to accessibility, emotional engagement, and content clarity. Pedagogically grounded, actionable recommended were included in the final report.
